No one is really sure why it happened, but about 6 months ago, the entire Cisco ASA line became virtually non-existent in all channels. Lead times were quoted at 2 months+, and most people that came across one of these ASAs weren’t letting them go cheap. ASA5505, ASA5510 and ASA5520s were all trading at, or above, their list prices!

Mostly everyone I talked to during the supply chain issue had a different explanation, and all of them seemed feasible. Some people had it pegged as a Copyright issue with the ASA hardware design. Others said Cisco was hanging onto their inventory until Q2 to offset some acquisitions. Then there was the fact that to run the new ASA images, customers were going to have to upgrade the memory on their devices. Also, the manufacturer of one the chips on the ASA board ran out of them. Somali pirates seized a ship full of ASAs? The oil spill? Global warming? Space aliens?

Whatever the case, we’re now seeing the ASAs coming back into distribution, and the prices for used devices are starting to return back to where they should be. Here is the Cisco ASA list pricing. If you’d like a quote on a new or used device, contact us

Wendell Odom from CertSkills wrote a great post on creating a Cisco lab for CCNP training. He lists 3 different lab setups for small, medium and large budgets. One of the main problems with buying labs piece by piece from different sources is that it is extremely time-consuming and tedious. For that reason, I decided I’d put all of Wendell’s labs together, complete with cables and post them to our ebay store:

Cisco this week is unveiling a switch and a router designed to help utilities construct IP-based infrastructures for power delivery, monitoring and control.

Cisco has said it expects the market for smart grid communications infrastructure to be $20 billion annually over five years.

The new products are the Connected Grid Router 2010 (CGR 2010) and Connected Grid Switch 2520 (CGR 2520). Both run Cisco’s IOS software and are based on existing Cisco products for enterprise networks, but support power utility-specific standards and protocols, such as supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA.

Cisco is really pushing power lately, which isn’t surprising since that’s what everyone cares about these days.

The demand for Cisco’s last “green” switches, the 3560V2 and 3750V2 have yet to make a splash on the used market. Although what could be more green than purchasing a pre-owned switch, that uses half the electricity of its predecessor? Nothing.
